4 /5 Hiroshi Kyoto:

Important Cultural Property, Reizeike House
The residence of the Kami Reizei family is located in Imadegawa-dori Karasuma Higashiiri, Kyoto City, and is designated as an important cultural property. Built in the 2nd year of Kansei (1790), it is the oldest existing public residence.
In the Meiji era, most of the old public houses moved to Tokyo according to the Emperor Meiji, so most of the public houses in the current Kyoto Gyoen became vacant and were demolished to maintain security. However, the Kami Reizei family also had a warehouse called Gobunko, which was once a royal seal, and because it was located outside Kyoto Gyoen, north of Imadegawa, it was not demolished.

The Reizei familys residence, which remains between the Doshisha campuses, is designated as an important cultural property as the last remaining valuable remains of the public residence in the current Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. At present, preservation and repair are ongoing and it is not possible to see the whole picture, but the remnants of the Edo period will soon be revived.
The Reizei family was a descendant of a poet from the Kamakura period called Toshinari Fujiwara and Teika, who served the imperial court with kagaku. The house was built in 1790 after the Great Fire of Tenmei, and in the tatami room, traditional events such as Tanabatas Kikkoten have been handed down from generation to generation. Reizeike Shigurete is a collection of valuable books that have not been known until now, such as "Korai Fuutesho", "Kokin Wakashū", "Gosen Wakashū", and 37 important cultural properties. It is managed by the Shiguretei Bunko.
